So you’ve got a pair of Nike Flyknit sneakers that need a cleaning right?

I’m here to guide you through the process of cleaning your precious Flyknits without causing any damage.

Don’t worry, I got you.

What Do We Know…?

You might wonder why you should listen to me.

Out of our five kids, three are teenage boys.

I hear the word “drip” being mentioned all the time.

In fact, recently I was told “Daddy, your drip looks cool…” when I purchased my new pair of Nike Air Max shoes, but that’s a story for another day.

When a teenager tells you that you look cool, trust me, take that compliment because that doesn’t happen often.

Anyway,

Over the years, we’ve learned a thing or two about keeping our home tidy and shoes clean.

Especially white sneakers that are made of delicate materials like Flyknit and when they’re being worn by teenagers.

We’ve tried and tested various methods, so what I’m sharing is based on real-life experience (and plenty of research).

What’s Coming Up?

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the entire process of cleaning your Flyknit shoes.

We’ll start by understanding what makes Flyknit material so special and why it requires careful cleaning.

Then we’ll dive into a step-by-step guide to mastering Flyknit shoe cleaning.

From preparation to choosing your cleaning arsenal, hand-washing techniques, drying tips and even how to tackle the challenge of white Flyknits.

We’ll also discuss whether machine washing is a good idea for your beloved shoes (spoiler alert: it’s a bit controversial).

Plus, I’ll share some tricks for maintaining your Flyknits and keeping them fresh as long as possible.

Finally, we’ll answer some frequently asked questions about caring for Flyknits and conclude with a summary.

Hopefully, once you’ve had a read, you will be equipped with the knowledge you need.

What Makes Flyknit So Special?

Flyknit is a high-performance, micro-engineered fabric that Nike introduced in 2012.

This unique material is designed to give your shoes a lightweight, form fitting, and virtually seamless finish.

Imagine wearing a sock but with the support of a sturdy sneaker, that’s how I’d describe a Flyknit.

The advantages?

There’s plenty.

They’re breathable, flexible yet supportive and incredibly light.

The Nike Flyknit’s are available for running, basketball and football. As an Englishman, I refuse to say Soccer…..sorry!

Anyway, with great benefits come great responsibilities.

The delicate nature of the Flyknit material means it requires some special TLC when cleaning.

Steps to Mastering Flyknit Cleaning

1. Preparation is Key:

Before we jump into cleaning, you need to get your shoes ready.

  1. Remove the insoles and laces as these can be cleaned separately.
  2. Give your shoes a good shake to dust off any loose or excess dirt and debris.

2. Choosing Your Cleaning Arsenal:

Next up is gathering your cleaning supplies.

You’ll need a mild detergent or specialized sneaker cleaning solution.

You don’t want anything too harsh as you don’t want to damage your Flyknits.

Also grab a soft brush or a soft cloth for gentle scrubbing. Don’t use a toothbrush as it will be too harsh..

A horsehair brush with long bristles should suffice for cleaning your sneakers.

Shorter bristles will be harder on the material and are generally used for nooks and crannies.

The wrong type of brush has the potential to damage your shoe so be careful.

You should always take the test first.  But more on that later.

3. The Hand-Wash Method:

Let’s talk about washing your Flyknit’s.

  1. Mix your gentle detergent with cold water (warm water might mess with the shoe’s shape and color).
  2. Immerse your shoes in this soapy solution and delicately scrub away any stains or dirt spots.
  3. Once done, thoroughly rinse them under cold running water until no soap residue remains.

4. Shape and Dry:

Naturally, after washing comes drying.

Before you leave them out to dry, stuff some old socks or rags inside each shoe to help retain their shape while drying.

If you have a shoe tree then you should put this in when you’re cleaning and leaving your shoe to dry.

Remember, always let them air dry and avoid direct sunlight or heat sources as they can warp your Flyknits.

5. The White Flyknit Challenge:

White Flyknits look amazing but can be a nightmare to clean.

For these, consider using delicate hand-washing. You might want to consider using “Oxiclean white” or “Tide coldwater”.

These products are gentle yet effective at maintaining the whiteness of your shoes.

Just remember to rinse thoroughly and dry as advised above!

Machine Wash: Yay or Nay?

Let’s talk about machine washing.

You might be tempted to toss your Flyknits into the washer for a quick clean, but hold on.

While it’s true that some people have had success with this method, it’s not without its risks.

The Pros?

It’s convenient and requires less effort than hand-washing.

The Cons?

Machine washing can lead to color fading, shape distortion and even damage to the Flyknit material itself.

If you decide to go down this route (no judgement here), you should do the following;

  • make sure you use a gentle cycle with cold water
  • place your shoes in a mesh laundry bag for extra protection
  • absolutely no tumble drying

I’ve seen many YouTubers using a washing machine for their Flyknit base shoes.

However, this isn’t something I’ve tried so I wouldn’t recommend something I’m not entirely confident about.

Who knows, maybe one day I might just try it and see what happens.

Maintenance Magic: Keeping Your Flyknits Fresh

So we’ve got cleaning covered, let’s talk about maintenance.

Below are some tips to keep your Flyknits looking fresh and fabulous:

  • Sneaker Protectants: Consider using sneaker protectants.  They create a barrier on your shoes’ surface that helps fend off stains and dirt.
  • Storage: Always store your shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This prevents discoloration and helps maintain the integrity of the Flyknit material.
  • Spot Cleaning and Odor Control: For minor stains, spot cleaning can be your best friend. Just dab a little cleaning solution on the stain and gently rub it off with a cloth. As for odors, try sprinkling some baking soda inside your shoes overnight as it works wonders in absorbing those nasty smells.

Remember that regular care goes a long way in extending the life of your Flyknits.

The Do’s and Don’ts

Before we go on, let’s do a quick recap of the key takeaways:

  • Do use a mild detergent or specialized sneaker cleaning solution.
  • Don’t use bleach or harsh chemicals as they can damage the Flyknit material.
  • The washing machine debate: While it’s not strictly a no-no, it comes with risks. If you choose to machine wash, remember to use a gentle cycle with cold water and avoid tumble drying.
  • Always air dry your shoes. Direct heat can warp the shape and fade the color of your Flyknits.

Diving Deeper: The Science Behind the Materials and Methods

Now that we’ve covered how to clean your Flyknits, let’s try to understand what makes this material so unique.

Flyknit is made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) yarns which are engineered at high temperatures to create a lightweight yet durable fabric.

This results in an upper that is form-fitting and virtually seamless.

The science behind cleaning Flyknit lies in its delicate nature.

Harsh detergents or scrubbing can break down the TPU fibers over time, leading to loss of shape and durability.

That’s why gentle hand-washing with a soft shoe brush or microfiber cloth is recommended.

The same principle applies to drying.

Heat can cause the TPU fibers to shrink or warp, which is why air drying away from direct sunlight or heat sources is crucial.

Understanding the material and its properties can help you make informed decisions about how to care for your Flyknits.

Next time you clean your shoes, you’ll be able to appreciate that it’s not just about making them look good, but also preserving their quality and longevity.

FAQs: Answering Your Flyknit Queries

Let’s address some of the most common questions you might have about caring for your Flyknits.

Is Flyknit Material Machine Wash Safe?

While machine washing isn’t strictly off-limits, it does come with risks.

The agitation can lead to shape distortion, color fading and potential damage to the material.

If you do choose to machine wash, use a gentle cycle with cold water and always air dry.

As mentioned above, use a mesh bag so your shoes don’t get damaged in the washing machine.

The Sock Dilemma: To Wear or Not to Wear with Flyknits?

Flyknits are designed to offer sock-like comfort and fit so wearing socks is entirely up to you.

Some people prefer the added comfort and sweat absorption that socks provide, while others enjoy the barefoot feel.

Defending Against the Elements: Is Flyknit Waterproof?

Unfortunately, no.

While Flyknit shoes are breathable and lightweight, they’re not designed to be waterproof.

However there are aftermarket sprays available that can add a layer of water resistance.

Just a point to note. Waterproof and water resistant are completely different so just be aware of this.

The Bleaching Debate: Can White Flyknits Handle it?

Bleach is a big no-no for Flyknits.

It’s too harsh for the delicate material and can cause discoloration.

For white Flyknits, stick to gentle detergents or specialized shoe cleaning solutions.

How to Restore Shrunken Flyknits to Their Original Size?

If your Flyknits have shrunk from heat exposure or improper washing, don’t panic.

Try stuffing them with wet newspaper or cloth and let them air dry.

The moisture will help the material stretch back out.

Best Homemade Solutions for Cleaning Flyknits at Home?

A simple mix of mild detergent and cold water works wonders for cleaning Flyknits.

For tougher stains, a paste of baking soda and water can be gently scrubbed onto the stain before rinsing off.

We navigated through the tricky terrain of machine washing, discovered some magic tricks for maintaining your Flyknits’ freshness, and answered some burning questions you might have had about this unique material.

Remember, proper cleaning and maintenance are crucial not just for keeping your shoes looking their best, but also for preserving their quality and extending their lifespan.

If you have suede or leather shoes then the methods mentioned above for Flyknit will be slightly different.

This is due to the nature of the material of the shoes so just be mindful.
